Uber is making a major move beyond individual meal deliveries, agreeing to acquire U.S. corporate catering platform ezCater for $2.3 billion in cash.
Announced on October 6, the deal brings together ezCater’s corporate catering network with Uber Eats and Uber for Business. ezCater connects businesses with more than 140,000 restaurants across the United States and generated over $2.5 billion in gross bookings during the past year. Its average order exceeds $400, making corporate catering considerably different from the typical individual food-delivery order.
For restaurants, the significance may be even greater. Catering provides opportunities to secure larger orders from offices, conferences, meetings and corporate events, potentially giving restaurants a more valuable revenue channel than relying solely on individual delivery customers.
The acquisition is also part of a broader expansion of Uber’s food-delivery business. The company is separately pursuing its proposed acquisition of Delivery Hero, highlighting its efforts to build a much larger global food-commerce operation.
The ezCater transaction still requires regulatory approval and other closing conditions. If completed, Uber says the combination should give restaurants access to more high-value catering customers while allowing businesses to manage group food orders through a larger delivery ecosystem.
For the gastronomy industry, the deal signals a shift: restaurant growth is increasingly being built around large-scale food occasions, not just individual meals.
